Background
The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) was created in 1950 by a group of concerned community volunteers. It's mission: to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities affected by substance abuse and dependency through education, intervention, prevention, and treatment as an entity in a multi-community resource system. Today CADA retains the spirit of its founders and pioneers in the programs it provides to individuals and group throughout the Lehigh Valley.
Philosophy CADA believes that all individuals have the right to receive services based on personal recovery preferences and possess the ability to change, grow and reach their own personal potential, regardless of economic status, social and/or personal limitations, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, and religious affiliation. Use of alcohol and/or other drugs can have a profound physical, social, and psychological impact on the individual, as well as the family and the greater community. CADA staff recognizes that the use of psychoactive substances falls on a continuum ranging from initial experimentation to dependency. Prevention programs aim to assist individuals through a group format, in developing the skills necessary to avoid involvement with harmful chemicals. Examples of topics covered include: development of healthy self-esteem, decision-making skills, refusal skills, anger management, and violence prevention. Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient treatment services are available for those individuals and families who are experiencing negative consequences as a result of substance use. Treatment begins with a through assessment of the client's history, past and current problems, strengths and weaknesses and goals for positive change. To guide the client's treatment experiences, a counselor and client develop and individualized treatment plan. By the end of their treatment experience, clients are abstinent from mood altering chemicals, able to make responsible decisions, able to identify relapse triggers and implement a relapse prevention plan, experience improved self-esteem, and the joys available through a sober lifestyle.
